What is it like being a CDL Wellness Coach?

Coaching a professional driver is a whole different approach than an office employee. Finding realistic goals for employees who have an office job is much easier than it is for the drivers work environment. Being on the road all the time, often eating out of their truck or grabbing fast food, not having a consistent exercise routine or access to a support person, are just a few. The drivers wellness journey from point A to B will always be more challenging.

Can you give an example of a health goal that is more challenging for a driver?

Take drinking more water for example, we all know we should, but many of us don’t. I have heard many reasons but the two most common are “not liking the taste and too many trips to the bathroom”. The later is just a nuisance to most of us but it’s a real issue with a driver! Understanding a drivers work environment is a very important piece of the coaching process.

So, what approach does a CDL Wellness Coach take?

We definitely have to get a little creative and think outside the box to deliver a tailored coaching experience that is motivating and not discouraging. We take a “small steps” approach and utilize the tools from our inclusive provider network. Before our coaches go into the field, they are trained on the driver lifestyle, DOT regulations and mentored by our seasoned coaches on driver-specific solutions.

Do you find working with drivers rewarding?

I really do! They seem to truly appreciate our help and that their company is providing them our program. Every small step my drivers take to a healthier lifestyle is celebrated and acknowledged. On our website, we have a page dedicated to testimonials from drivers who have achieved positive health changes. It is a proud moment for the coach because it is validation that they are making a difference in the industry. For drivers just starting on their wellness journey, we hope the testimonial page provides encouragement and plants a seed “if he can do it, so can I.”
